Friends truck, shortbox 4x4, 400M, C-6 and I believe a Dana 205.
There appears to be no drive to the rear wheels and when you try to put it in park while running it grinds as if to try to hit park while rolling. The 2H detent is impossible to hit and the 4H & 4L both grind when you try to engage while stopped.
I'm hoping that this is a linkage issue. What do I need to do to diagnose?
thanx

Tried to engage the transfer case in all gears including neutral and park. Grinding all the way around.
Only way to get into park is to shut the motor off or it grinds.
Can jam the Transfer case while running which tells me the Transmission is spinning freely and not hard in gear(speculation).
Only safe way to shift the transfer case is also to shut the motor off.
my np205 used to do that once in a while after a hard run in the mud if I was in low range. some time's I'd hit it hard in reverse before I went back to 2wd and that helped. I always just figured I had everything bound up inside.
Dug this up after much searching is closest to what is happening to me.
Truck is 79 short bed ranger auto with 460, c6 np205.
Have to turn off truck in order to shift in 4x4 without grinding. Can shift it in then turn truck back on and works perfectly. any ideas? is it just binding? dont want to break anything. Truck doesnt see much more than a dirt road
