Ok, I have to concede, I am some what short and really cannot do anything to the engine without a ladder. I have been thinking of a solution. Then it hit me, a rig has a tilt hood. I started trying to figure out a way to make the front end of the truck tilt. I then had an idea. I could come here and ask the pros. Does anyone have an idea?
at 5'6" i have the same problem. they make a step that hangs on the tire and is adjustable. makes a nice platform to stand on and folds up to go in a toolbox or behind the seat. but i like the idea of the tilt front end and there kits out there for them.
There are kits for the tilt front ends. They are made of fiberglass and not extremely cheap. I work(ed) on semis and always liked the access from the tilt forward hood and the inline engines. I looked into it and in the end it didnt really seem worth the work and money.
As fdude said you can get the steps that go around the tires for working on vehicles. They come in different sizes for cars and heavy trucks. I weigh 270 and they hold my weight without issue. I think a step runs about 50 bucks, but I could be wrong.

My wife has a 2 step metal step stool/mini ladder I got her for the kitchen so she would quit interupting my TV shows with "top shelf" requests. I borrow that and it works great for me. Just ticks her off when I steal her steps. I think I paid around $10 for it. It has just the right slant to it that it will sit right up next to the engine compartment and I can reach everything without rubbing or scrathing paint. The top step puts my feet just above the top of the tire rim.
