Howdy,
This I'm sure is a retarded question, but being a newbie I guess that's my job. Are there any qualitiy tilt front end kits out there, or is it all what you fab up @ home? I'd like to keep all the metal and not go w/ glass. Thanks as always.
I personally have not seen any kits for a steel tilt nose. A big chunk of the fabrication is welding the sheet metal together. Actually I would group it into 3 parts: 1) weld the sheet metal together to form the one piece nose. 2) fabricate the hinges and 3) fabricate a latching system (I say system because it could be more than just a latch) Mine uses a hood latch from a honda and 2 guide pins for the outer fender panels. Then of course there are the options of "How will it be lifted?" Mine was fairly easy to lift manually as it is front heavy so you only have to pull it maybe a foot then it wants to fall open. I chose to go the hydraulic root.
lilman,
You might want to check out Mr. Niolon's website for a "how to" install with a fiberglass front end. I have not done this but it looks like the bracket design used for the glass front could be easily adapted to use with steel, as long as you plan to split the fenders in some manner. Check it out!
About the latch, a friend of mine is supposed to show me how to use the original latch when doing the tilt hood...
I can try to check that out, in case there's anyone interested...
Regards,
Lobo
I'm really sorry... I misunderstood your post... You want the tilt front, not the hood...
Sorry....
my problem with the bear claw (rotary) lathes is how to use them and make it pretty... guess that goes for any latch mechanism...
I think the hydraulic or electric cylinders would hold it down, but not keep it from dancing around in the wind and scuffing paint...
I've yet to find something suitable ...to me anyway... still leaning toward a caddy or camaro trunk/hatch electric latch that pulls it down gently after the latch is tripped
I use the hydraulic cylinders (from a convertable top) along with the honda latch and when the latch is adjusted properly it closes nice and tight. I also installed a hood pin in each outer fender panel (it's hard to describe but maybe I could get a pic of it) to keep the fenders from flapping in the breeze. All I have to do (from the drivers seat) is pull the hood release and flip a switch and my nose is up.
