Im looking to install a cb in my truck before RRE. I have a regular 40 channel with weather band in my old truck that I'm thinking about installing. Just not sure I want it in there permanently, due to the size. Also not sure about which antenna to use. I have a pair of 4' firesticks from my younger days. They seem to tall for me now. Was thinking about a pair of 2' firesticks on the mirrors. I also have a couple magnetic mount available. I know I could take the cb after the trip. I was looking at the cobra 75 wx st that mounts under the dash and all the controls are on the handset. That wouldn't take up much room when not needed since I could unplug the handset. Also I remember reading on here about someone mounting their antenna on the drivers side of the hood. So im looking for ideas and experiences. Thanks.
As far as the CB itself you could get a small CB and put it where your brake controller normally goes since you won't be towing anything during the trip.
The larger question that needs answered before I could give you any further ideas are to identify how you intend on using the CB. If it is something you are going to use to transmit and receive with then you should go with a specific setup but if you are only using to listen in on road updates and conditions and only use it in an emergency then there other options for mounting. I run HAM radios and scanners in mine. My CB unit is a hand held all-in-one that I rarely use because I can get better information from a scanner. I am not sure if you can see in my pick (photo album) but I have run an antenna to the top of each of the half doors on my truck. The wires run from the dash, under the rails, up the inside molding and through the rubber hose protectors on each door and then out through the top. I can provide you with some detailed photos if you like. On the driver’s side I always have my scanner antenna up and on the passenger side I just run my HAM antenna when I need to use the radio. In your case, you could simply unscrew the antenna when you don’t need it and cap it off. Remember, for the best reception and transmission you want to get the antenna as high as you can and unobstructed in all directions as possible. CBs are limited enough and if you put a two foot stick antenna like you have your radio, the range will be very limited.
I run dual Fransis (mispelled) sticks on my mirrors and an older heated up Cobra 29 with weather channels in my ride but I use mine all the time. If your just looking for a temporary setup just run with the easiest setup, a cab mount entenna properly grounded and roll with it.
My main use would be to listen for road updates. Obviously I would want to be able to send and receive as well.
Petey that was the write-up I was thinking about. Thanks.
