I know, for most, CB's are a thing of the past, unless you're an old school big truck driver. I R 1. Every other weekend I take the trek to downstate Michigan to visit my wife. Her job keeps her there, and mine up here.
Since I just got this 2012 F150, it doesn't have a CB installed, yet. Thing is, I don't see a good place to put one without butchering up the overhead, or worse yet, the top of the dash.
Do any of you have one installed? I was thinking of that storage thingy below the SYNC. It looks like it might be the right size for a compact radio, but as it is, I have 3 full size radios with no truck to put them in, 2 Uniden PC78 Elites, and my favorite, a 949 Galaxy. How about an antenna? I've never heard any rave reviews for a mag mount, but if that's the best option, so be it. I really don't feel enthused about drilling holes in the body anywhere. I do have an ARE cap, and momentarily thought about drilling into that, and running a ground wire somewhere.
my 88 was limited for under dash space, so i made a "L" shaped bracket that i mounted to the trans hump in front of the seat. then i mounted the CB and light bar/arrow stick controller to the plate. it worked fine for 22 years. i took it out last year in preparation for the cab swap. antennas were mounted to the mirrors. for the newer trucks i have seen many antennas mounted to the bed rails behind the cab.
Thanks Tom. Over the last couple of days, I got a little Midland 1001, and a Lil Will antenna. The radio appears it will fit right into that little tray/cubby thingy on the lower part of the centre dash. I've never used a magnet mount/base loaded antenna, but the Wilson got good reviews where ever I could find info. I plan on sticking it just in front of the high mount brake light on the roof.
Since you're another driver, you might find this interesting. I just got a brandy new Coronado, set back axle, short sleper, it's what we call a Michigan special. I stuck my PC78 Elite in there, and used the standard hookups from the factory. Man, I was surprised, that barefoot radio really is getting out there. I have an Astatic mike as well on it.
i stuck the old 959 galaxy in the mack with a wilson 5000 antenna on the drivers mirror bracket. i get about 5 miles reception in the new jersey tristate area.
that is very good, most people only get 1/4-1/2 miles.
i have the galaxy 88 and 66 radios sitting in the closet collecting dust.
I've got an ancient Cobra 29 bungeed to the front of my console.
K-40 mag-mount antenna, back of cab above the stoplight.
I don't use it very often, but it's there when I need it: figuring out who started playing bumper cars to cause the 5-mile backup on I-35...
I was also rather hesitant to start drilling, even though my preferred mount location is on the headliner between the sun visors. But the way I have it mounted now keeps it out of the way when I don't need it.
That 29 has to be the most bought/used radio out there. Most of the guys I work with have them. Only two of us have Unidens, and the other guy bought his from me.LOL
One of the other guys got a new Coronado about 9 months ago, he's got an ancient Midland compact, I don't know the model, but the combination of his radio and the standard Freightliner antennas work pretty well. I hope my setup in my little truck works as well. Hopefully I'll get around to installing it through this week. It all depends on how my runs work out.
