Time for new tires and a front end alignment. Should I replace the upper
control arm bolts with Moog camber bolt kits? Pros or Cons? The truck didn't come with any , I just thought it would be easier to make the adjustments.
Thanks for the input.
when i changed the upper arms and ball joints, i used a center punch and put 3-4 marks on the frame around the bolt/ washer. Disassemble and put the new arm on and put the bolts back in exactly the same place they came off of. Worked great, never had to do an alignment. Some say if an alignment is done, the kit makes it easier, but you really dont need it to loosen bolts and bump them a little in or out..
When I did my upper/lower control arms and tie rod ends and went to have the alignment done they couldn't get my camber within spec, had to go back and add the camber bolt kit. The downfall is after two alignments it still doesn't feel quite right. I think the techs around here need more training.
When I did my 2000 f150 4x4 upper arms, lower ball joints, moog camber kits and bilstiens, took it to ford and did an alighnment and had the road force balance done.
all done and I asked to see the print out of the alighnment and the camber was in the yellow on the right side and the readings for the left were the same before and after,(in the green around 2, they said you must have worn parts, I said ok ill drive it and come back because itll pull, he said ok if it pulls come back, well came back and
Thats when I got the service manager involved, asked him what kind of shop you have here? They redid it and showed me the print out, very nice between 0 and -2, took it for a ride and perfect, straight wheel
Also had them redo the balance and the wheel weights from the balance because they put the uncoated ones on, It was a real hassle
I guess you have to know your stuff or you might get taken advantage of
Put them on. With that many miles it needs to be adjusted after all the hits and road wear. I replaced all my wear parts and did it. Drives like a new truck!
I did the same job on my truck last year. Before I did anything, I called my local tire shop and asked what they thought about the Moog cam bolt kit. They replied it made their job much, much easier and offered to install it for me, along with the upper control arms and lower ball joints. I told them, "no thanks", and replaced all components myself (including the cam bolt kit), but I did have them align everything when I was done.
