I'm looking for a towed vehicle (toad for RVers) for a motorhome. Why not make it an f100? I have a line on a 67 F100 with a 390 and 3-on-the-tree. Would this manual transmission let me tow it 4 wheels down? It would need to have the oil slinger inside the transmission to be on the output shaft. If it is on the input shaft (which would not be turning in neutral towing down the road) the transmission would be damaged. I bought a Mazda 6 with a 5 speed a few years ago just for this and now have found it can't be towed without a tow dolly.
if you arent afraid to spend 10 minutes just 4 lil nuts hold the drive shaft on to the rear end just take them off and wire it up out of the way simple solution little fuss and saves tranny from unneeded excess wear
bumps and dents are pretty dang light as far as trucks go... only 4,000lbs for f100,, as far as towing it goes, id unhook the driveshaft too. its not hard to do.
Get a longbed, then a driveshaft disconnect can be installed at the center support bearing. Not the cheapest option, but then no climbing under the truck to remove and install the driveshaft, just pull a lever in the cab.
I really don't want to climb under a truck and remove/reattach a universal joint while trying to RV. I know some of the later years of F150's with 5 spd can be towed, so I need to see what might be transferable.
The tell tell of whether a manual can be towed is the oil slinger inside box. If it is on the output shaft, its ok. Input shaft slinger is not moving when in neutral, so seals and bushings will fail.
I don't know the answer to your question, but it seemed like in the olden days most all the manual transmissions were towable. I have done the "drop the drive shaft" routine and it isn't hard, but does get old. I understand your comment regarding the slinger and agree.
roll of black tape $1-$3 to hold u joint together and attach out of way if you dont have trusty tried and true baling wire ....1/2" wrench $5 some have 7/16" or probably already have one time spent 4 minutes 24 seconds (timed myself) sounds a hell of alot cheaper than a disconnect or a different trans which takes an hour at minimum to change trans... a smart choice i would say would be try it this way but if you have the extra $ to throw away its your personal preference and ultimately your decision anyway best of luck and happy travels
