I want to put large tires on my bronco. now it has 30s on it but i want to go bigger like 36 to 40 somewhere in there. Do I need to put a new rear end in to accomidate those bigger tires or will my stock do. also how do i find out what kind of rear end i have and what would be the best rear end to put in to get optimum acceleration and power? thanks for the info
right now i'm running 35 inch MTR's and that with seven inches of lift. 4 suspension, 3 body. With some trimming you could fit 36's easy. The rear axle you have is an 8.8, which is a pretty good rear end in my opinion. You'll need to change you axle ratio to at least 4:10's, but for 36's you probably would want 4:56's. I think that 6 inches of lift and 35's is the optimum setup for bronco's personnally, that is unless you going into some real harry stuff. Then you might want to think about a solid axle swap, then you can run real big stuff.
FYI, for reliability, you shouldnt run bigger than 36-37" on the Dana 44 front end. Bigger than that and you'll probably be asking for trouble. Thats definately straight axle territory.
and dont forget while your changing the rear gears ya have to chage the front also .
i'm running 33's with 3.50's now and am thinking about going to 35-36's if i can every wear out these tires and am thinking 4.56 but the cost is got me on hold (if i need to regear then i want lockers )
Just a note.
I have a guy that I get my offroad stuff from and he has 15 inches of custom lift on his 91 bronco w/ 302 and c6. He has 4.11 gears and is going to 5.36, or somewhere around that.
He runs 44 inch super swampers. I have seen this truck in action, and he stands on the throttle through everything imaginable.
He hasent bronken anything in the front end, yet.
Just my two cents
The Ford 8.8" or 9" rear end will be fine as long as it is regeared properly. The front TTB Dana44 may not fair so well with tires that big especially if you get into any serious off-road situations. Not long ago someone posted the correct mathematical formula for calculating gear ratio-to-tire size. To keep the engine within its normal power band, this is imperative especially if you plan on increasing tire size that much from stock. If you can't find the formula, I know Superlift has it on their site under "gearing up for taller tires". Obviously those tires won't fit under a stock truck...some sort of lift will be required. Going to 40" or better may require driveline modifications as well since I doubt you will be putting in a 6-8" body lift under it.
By way of the formula mentioned, the closest gear ratio to keep the engine spinning reasonably close to stock RPM is 4.11's for 33" tires provided you are running an AOD or E4OD. Transmissions without the overdrive gear (C6) may need to be geared a little differently.
I have had bad luck with my 8.8" rear. I put hairline cracks next to both spring perches while running 35" swampers with 4.10s and a Detroit locker. I am replacing both axles on my '96 Bronco (Dana 60 front and 10.25" FF rear). If you replace the rear axle, you will need to figure out how to rework the VSS that plugs into the top of the rear diff. This controls shift points (on autos), ABS, and the speedometer. The 10.25" from about '87 and up has the sensor on top. Problem with this swap is you'll have 8 lug rear with stock 5 lug front. Then you'll have to replace the hubs on the TTB from a 3/4 ton TTB.
