I have 4 P/U's with IDI's and would like to get a spare motor/trans to have ready to go. I have found "builder" engines for $3-400, and reman engines with between 60K and 120K miles for $1500-$2500.
1) Any downside to having an engine sit around until I need it? (rebuilt or used eng - do seals dry out and leak, valve springs weaken...?)
2) Is anybody making a rebuild "kit" that would have all the things I need to rebuild an engine??
3) Are there any no brainer upgrades that I should do?? I will be putting an ATS turbo system on it as I scavanged this from a junkyard 2 years ago.
I am not looking to pull 22,000 lbs up a mountain at the posted speed limit. I will occasionally pull a 13,500 lb back-hoe on a 6000 lb trailer (5-6 times a year about 40miles one-way). This will also be a daily driver truck. The other trucks, 1 is a service truck, the other is going to have a dump box installed on it. The 4th truck will be for sale once I pull the service box off of it.
I am looking for reliability with solid performance. Fuel efficiency is another aspect I wouldn't mind.
Your asking a lot of the idi, the daily driver should do you pretty good if properly tuned, we can see upwards of 20mpgs...the idi that pulls the 19,500 lbs load will pull it, but not at a powerstrokes pace...

I would say with some work it will do it as good as a 7.3 psd, maybe with a 6.0... but either way not at the posted speed liimit if its up a grade.
Why not pull the engine in the one youre going to sell? Then part out / scrap the rest of it. As far as sitting, i dont think theres much to hurt. Wrap it up good, store it somewhere inside, preferably climate controlled. Every once in a while, 3-6 months, i would squirt some oil in the cylinders through the GP holes. Some say letting the IP / injectors set without running isnt good on em. But i dont see how its any different sitting in a engine vs. sitting on a shelf new.
The one I am going to sell is a well worn 6.9 with an auto (C-6 I'm assuming). The others are 7.3's w/ZF5's. The body is rough so the only things I can use out of it are the axles and transfer case. Both of which I already have spares for.
I'm not expecting PSD performance, I stated the conditions so you would know that it wasn't gonna be babied it's whole life.
My 89 with 3.55's pulls the back-hoe pretty well. However, if I am starting out on a hill I need to use the low range in the transfer case to save on my clutch. My 88 with 4.10's pulls the back-hoe well off the line, but falls on it's face when I put it in 5th gear. I usually run 50 mph in 4th when towing with this truck.
Currently the one with 3.55's gets 20-21 mpg. The one with 4.10's gets 16-17. Obviously both of those fuel mileage #'s are "unladden".
I think a cam and turbo with the fuel turned up will put you right where i think you want to be. Both will let the engine work easier while performing better.
For which turbo or cam? There are a few turbo kits available, new 2-3k, used 500-1000. Cam i want to say is around 300, not sure what the springs are, or if he sells em together. Check with NMB2 for a turbo cam. As far as master engine overhaul kits, i think there is one or two out there
NMB2 recommended that I order Clevite bearings per cheapest e-bay source, and stellite faced exhaust valves from SBI. I'm not sure how much quality difference there is between rebuild kit manufacturers, but online is substantially cheaper than local parts houses. All of the ones I called quoted me over 2K, some were over $2500 for the "master" kit. When I asked about quality and who the manufacturer was they didn't know, so I'm guessing all of it is various shades of import junk
I would rather build a 6.9l than a 7.3l. 6.9l idit with zf5, turbo cam, exhaust, turbo pump, set of good quality injectors would be an ideal set up for what you want to do.
