I'm really starting to question the reliability of my "new' truck - just out of warranty too, go figure....
Just discovered this evening that my heat doesn't work, blows completely cold on all settings. Not a huge pressing deal as we head into summer, but I want to start troubleshooting this now. I don't have a Hayes Manual for this truck yet, but I plan to pick one up.
Logic tells me that its one of either 2 things - the control in the dash, or some sort of acutator valve that directs hot coolant (or not) through the heater core. Or maybe there is something else that I'm not thinking of.
Anyone have any suggestions on troubleshooting, or any likely suspects? Common problems?
Yikes! After reading the forums for a few hours, it looks like it may be the dreaded blend door problem. So dissappointing for a truck that's only 4 years old.
Strange, a couple times recently I noticed a "whump" sound after start-up coming from the dash. This used to happen to my old Ranger from time to time with no ill effects. Don't know if this is related or not.
I'll check a few more things in daylight tomorrow but my gut is telling me its the blend door. I'll pray that it's not....
It most likely is the blend door actuator which is behind the glove box. If you have very good eyes and a strong flash light this is an easy check. Pull the glove box door and interior. Run the heat control over to hot with truck on and see if the shaft turns between the actuator and blend door. At 52 yo I couldn't tell so I pulled the actuator and held it in mine hand to test in my 06 Ranger. It had quit working. Got a new one online for around $40 and I was back in business. It will work fine without that pain in the as* rear bolt reinstalled.
Thanks, I shone a flashlight and manipulated the heat control and I couldn't see anything moving. Not sure if that is part of the axle of the motor that I can see or some sort of sleeve. Got my little dental mirror and mini-ratchet and tried to get the damn thing out for a close inspection but no dice - that bolt in the back has so far proven impossible.
At 6'5" and 270Lbs I just don't have the nimble little fingers to get in there and make it happen.
I was able to get mine out with a 1/4" drive, it was a pain though. Sounds like the actuator is your problem. It is the shaft and not a sleeve you are looking at. Now getting that bolt back in is a major aggravation. I tried and gave up. Read were some others had replaced theirs and just left that bolt out.
also make sure you heater control valve is working....the heater control valve is inline with the heater hoses.it works off a vacuum line .....it shuts the flow off when the AC is on.......
Actuator motor done, rear bolt is a major pain in the *** but the blend door works as it should again.
Not moments after I got that repair done, my A/C condenser packed it in. Just a few miles outside of the factory warranty - perfect timing, Ford! That repair was a bit out of my league, cost me $500.
I really have to question the quality of this truck now, pretty dissappointed.
I didn't bother to replace the screw in the back on my blend door. I got it out with a home made 1/4" drive tool. (A short piece of steel with an inexpensive socket welded on it) That has been quite a few years ago now and it is still working fine with just two screws holding it.
