i have a 1980 f100 4.9l 300 i6 and i just changed the oil about a week ago and ever since then ive been hearing what seems to be a lifter tapping. and its also got a small back firing or miss noise. i used the Valvoline 10 - 40 high mileage oil. is there a easy fix for this or is there any reason why it would start doing this after an oil change? this is the first oil change since ive had the truck and i drove it prolly 2500 miles. ive had it for about 5 months and it was my grandpas and he change the oil every 3000 and never had this problem.
The same thing after I did my oil change on my pickup bout two years ago, don't know why but after I added new oil it started tick tick ticking away. After a while it would go away then come back I tried everything additives nothing worked for me. I ended changing the lifters with new ones. It solved my problem.
Is the tapping noise continuous or just upon initial start-up?
i can notice it more when i first start it up but i can also hear it when i come to a stop like at a stop light but then other times i dont hear it. but it has a miss like every 15 secs and then other times there isnt a miss at all.
What brand of filter did you use? Sounds like an odd question I know. Fram filters use a paper anti-drainback valve, which lets oil drain back into the pan draining the filter. I'd recommend a purolator, wix, or motorcraft filter.
