i started the truck up and the valves or lifters started ticking. but this comes after i took the valve covers off and cleaned the push rods and rocker arms. so i don't know whats wrong. it isn't very loud, but it does get on my nerves.

I'm betting you got some trash down in the lifter area while cleaning. You might be able to clean it up with some Marvel Mystery oil in your crankcase.

If the engine has a lot of miles, be cautious about doing any agressive oil flush treatments. Sometime you can break loose a piece of gunk and get it floating around in the oil. Then it gets clogged in an oil passage and damage results.

I dunno man. I worked at a lube rack part time for a few years and have done thousands of engine flushes on all kinds of engines. Some were so bad oil wasn't flowing very well. The situations always improved or remained the same. We did an F-150 that came in 2,000 miles early for her first oil change at 48,000 miles. (She used slick 50 of cousre) The oil would not even come out the bottom when you poured it in the top. We got it flowing again. Of course the engine was shot but at least it was getting oil.

Ummmm, you DID put the correct nails in the correct spots, didn't you? The necked down rocker arm shaft bolt goes in a specific hole in the head... Not trying to cast you in a dimbulb light, but the bolts do differ, and it is easy to put them in wrong. If you didn't, you would not get any oil to the rocker arms, and they would get very mad. And squeaky. And hot.

Did you remove and disassemble the rockers? Did you keep the pushrods in the same positions? If components got moved around the lifters might have taken a set (got gummed up) and might take a while to loosen up. Go with the Marvel Mystery Oil and run it for a while. It may come out of it.
