Upside down steering wheel

Had an collision where I sideswiped a stopped pilot with right fender and door of my 97 ranger while turning right. Afterwards steering wheel was upside down ! Tire does not appear to have been hit although truck may have moved to left. At shop, but no clear answer as to how this happened - ideas?

The connection between the frame mounted steering gear and the steering column would be one cause. Another would be that the steering wheel is mounted with splines that can slip under abnormal torque. With the front wheels aligned to the front, loosen the connection at the steering gear and see if the steering wheel will rotate back into the proper position. If that works tighten the connections back down. There is a semi-flexible joint between the steering column and gear. It is called a jack shaft or sometimes a rag joint. It's purpose is to eliminate small vibrations that might otherwise be felt in the steering wheel. I have done almost the same thing driving across a rough plowed field chasing Coyotes while shooting out the window and driving into a 5 foot deep wash out.

Thanks,

Shop initially told insurer that it was pre-existing ! Then they partially pulled column and reset it . When I picked it up from bidy shop, AC vents not working - air only on windshield - again shop said pre-existing (winnerworld auto). Took to my guy who reconnected vacuum connection at fender can.

Meanwhile back to insurer and shop as alignment pulling right - I beam not right.

Back to my guy when insurer shop done.
