np205 removal

Hi there,
New to the forum.... I have a 79 f250 4x4 w/ 460 on propane, c6 tranny and the np205 t-case. I searched this in this forum and on the web in general. Sorry fer the noob question but I need to know if I remove the t-case from my c6 tranny do I leave the cast housing attached to the tranny or to the tcase? Has anyone see a good write up on this? I honestly did search....

Thanks

Yes, leave the adapter on the transmission. There are six bolts that hold teh t-case to the adapter on most Ford 4x4s. The top two can be a bit of a pain to get out; you may have to get creative with wrenches and/ or sockets to get them out, but they will come out.

Be prepared, the 205 is pretty heavy to hold above your head and other body parts.

One thing that would make it a heck of a lot easier is if you make a cradle that will bolt to the t-case and fit your floor jack. I have never actually done that; but always think about it when the job is done.

thanks

I have heard that it would be foolish to just try and drag it out w/o a cradle. Got it. I think the bolts will be relatively accessible because the truck came with a body lift so there seems to be lots of room up there.

Next question, If I take the case out will I be able to replace all gaskets and seals without splitting the case or is that mandatory?.. Again Ive looked for rebuild articles and havent found the np205 for dumb asses ( me). With that being said I am looking at dwnloading a manual from quad 4x4 3oo + pgs w/pics.
Should be a good start.

Thanks all

When you get a better look you will see that you can't split the case and that all components are removed through various openings.
If it shifts well and is not making exessive noise you can get a gasket/seal kit for under $40. easy job. I f needed you can get a complete rebuild kit for under $200. more work but still easy job, read up!

I pulled a C6/205 combo out from a truck that was on stands. It was intimidating but I let the floor jack do the work.

I've only pulled them with the drivetrain already out of the truck. Its enough of a bitch that way. I'd recommend a helper. You sometimes have to pull it back off the trans kinda hard, and its hard to do that and manage the weight when it comes loose.
