Any advise is welcomed! I was trying to install a new pinion seal on a 1981 9in differential. Should I get Motorcraft Pinion Oil seal installing tool, a large socket, or is there another way? It was somewhat easy until this point.
Im trying to remember is that the seal thats goes where the yoke is connected? I cant remember but I thought we used a block of wood and a brass hammer or ball-peen hammer on my 8.8. Not 100%
What are you having a hard time doing exactly?
Usually I tap them on slowly and use a pick to keep the mating surface from rolling over.
Apply some grease to the leading edge of the seal to promote proper break-in.
Get the pre-load set properly the first time by going slowly.
Not difficult to do but time consuming if done right! Good luck.
I am having trouble getting the pinion seal itself in the third member. I have tried a 2" pvc and a block of wood and I have already screwed up on seal. I am about ready to just spring for the tool. I have no idea why this is so difficult. it is like the seal is too big. I have tried two of them i am on the second one.
ok WOW! well I got it after cross referencing the OLD pinion seal. Well sure that worked. WOW that was really easy.
Thank you guys I am sure you guys thought this guy cannot do anything.
LOL Thanks again guys
