Exhaust Options Video Thread

One of the most irritating things to me about looking at exhaust options is the lack of the presence of a good sound clip of what the exhaust sounds like on a given vehicle. After all, that's why you're changing the xhaust right? To change the sound!?

With that in mind, and since I had some options to play with, I took a few videos of different options as I was building my latest variation of the exhaust on my truck. I know the sound quality of these videos isn't great, but it should give you more than enough to hear what the different options sound like.

All these videos were taken with the 3" dowpipe and EBPV delete already done to the truck. I simply didn't think to take any before that. Most people know what a stock PSD 7.3 exhaust sounds like anyway.

So here are some different setups that I have tried on my truck.

Stock exhaust:

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/JhlpPu0qe5I" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/MK-_afGoHC8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Forgive the shaky camera on the ride-along videos. The trucks ride like, well, like a 1 ton truck...

Here are 2 videos of the stock intermediate pipe (no catalytic converter) with the 3" downpipe, EBPV delete, 6637 kit, etc.

And finally, here is a pair of videos with my finished (albeit unconventional) straight pipe exhaust. It measure about 4.5" OD and is about as straight a straight pipe as it gets. I will give a rep point to the first one to guess what this pipe setup it.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/7gGzOcYxm6Y" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/VJ56KhGrILI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

This setup is LOUD! I am not completely satisfied with the sound. Although the turbo whine is impressive the drone of the exhaust bothers me a little. I'm not sure my neighbors are going to be happy with me either when I leave the house at 0515. I figure I will run this one a while and see how I feel about it after a few weeks/months. I still think a full 4" exhaust with a small straight through muffler might be the setup of preference for me because I don't like the obnoxious drone.

Ideally I would like to keep the drone and raspy tone to a minimum but keep the turbo whistle. I don't know that this is possible with these trucks but anything is better than the exhaust that was on the truck when I got it. Some moron had fitted up a true dual exhaust system to it that used the stock pipe up to a splitter then ran about 1 5/8" duals OUT THE BACK. It would about asphyxiate you to leave the truck running and hitch up a trailer and towing for any amount of time would leave soot all over the front of your trailer. Maybe not a big deal if you were towing a utility trailer or something, but I got tired of cleaning off the front of our camper.

At any rate, there are some videos to watch and some sounds to be heard. Enjoy!

Here are a couple of pics of what I did a couple of years ago. With the cutout open it sounds a lot like yours Nate. It's 3 1/2 to the cut out (no cat or muffler.) I have not had a problem with soot when towing my 5er.

This pic is with it stock (without the cat) and stock to behind the rear wheel. It is a little quieter this way but i run almost all the time with it open, I like the turbo whistle and also notice a little power gain. Some day I'll open it up with 4 1/2 and eliminate the cutout. I just did it because I was really worried it would be to much noise, but the turbo really cuts the noise down.

Yeah I almost wish I could do a cut out on mine as well. It would be the best of both worlds in some ways. Oh well, I will see how I like it like this and maybe the cutout will be the next option.

I got it at Summit about 40 bucks. They also had some electric ones but they were a lot more $$.

Great! Just what I need. Another reason to go to Summit Racing! They're only about 45 minutes from me here.

Actually what I think I would like the best would be to do a 3.5" (stock size) pipe all the way back. The 4.5" that I have is a nice deep sound but it seems to make it drone more than the stock intermediate pipe dumped under the cab did. It just seems like the diameter of that pipe makes it resonate or something. You hear the rumble a little more in this big pipe than you did with the stock size pipe, for sure.

I will run it for a while and see how I like it in a week or two. One thing is for sure you can turn some heads with it like it is here!

Nope.

Edit: Not that there's anything wrong with altering the exhaust system in order to affect the noise it generates, but that's not the reason that I would alter the exhaust system. To me, the only job the exhaust piping downstream of the engine has to do is carry exhaust gases away from the engine and cab.

That 4 1/2 setup is just exactly like mine, except I got 4". It is for sure loud, you are right there. I like it though, may be too loud for some for sure.

As far as where the pipe came from, my only guess is a non-ford pickup. Is it off of a cummapart or a duracrap?

The sound is growing on me. Although at 6:30 in the morning I wish it were a little more muted. Oh well, we will see how well I like it in a week or two. I am also curious to see whether I see any difference in fuel economy from the stock setup I have been running for the last month or so.

As far as the guess goes, sorry. But that's not it.

Well, I really had no idea, figured I'd try.

Noise is no concern where I live, but I could see some prissy neighbors not liking the noise much.

My neighbors aren't prissy or I would have no problem at all waking them up early.

I just don't want to be "That Guy" you know. I do try to be considerate. although they tend to be pretty forgiving of my wrenching around in the shop at all hours of the night, etc.

It was a good guess but this one is a little "less conventional" an approach.

Just wanted to come in here and add a couple more sounds for people to pick through.
Here's videos of my last 2 exhausts. Specs are the same for both except for the different stacks.

Specs- 1st vid- 3" downpipe, 4" DP back and into dual 5" bullhauler stacks. 2nd/3rd vid was the same except with a 6" single stack

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbIT2...1&feature=plcp

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RGEW...ure=plpp_video

Here's a clip with the 6" single stack that I took for Glenn to compare tow tune smoke levels awhile back. So that's why the camera is pointed straight back. The last video was from outside the truck, this one is from inside the truck with the windows up.

Travis, is that soot on your tailgate from your high exhaust? If so, that's bad to the bone, man.

Yeah the soot on my tailgate is from my stack. LOL. If I get caught under the turbo at low RPMs, the stack doesn't push the soot over the tailgate. hahaha
