On one of my trucks, '96 250 5.8 E4OD 4x4, the 4 wheel drive is extremely hard to shift into. I mean REALLY hard. It almost feels like something will break. Finally after much struggling, it'll go in. I know there was a thread on here some time ago that had a poster (Diesel Brad? iirc) put zerks onto his shifter ***'y. Is this what the problem is here? It almost feels like its internal in the xfer case, but I cannot be certain. Where do I start with the grease fitting on the shifter-or is that a waste of time...thanks for any input!

I just had mine (transfer case) rebuilt. The tranny guy said there are some type of nylon or plastic parts in there that can go bad. I had him check those for me and do a general overhaul, I think it was ~$200.
the problem is usually corrosion in the shifter. the aluminum get real nasty .
take it apart, clean and oil it up and it will be smooth as a hot knife through butter.
Well, I CAN put it into 4WD while moving, but I usually don't do it that way..I think I'll try the shifter lube/grease deal then go from there. I really hope it isn't internal in the xfer case though. FWIW, I know these shifters can be problematic, so I'll start on that..

the external linkages are also notorious for getting sticky and eventually freezing up. Mine was frozen when I bought it. I keep it lubed up with lucas red & sticky and make sure to shift it into 4x4 at least once a month now.
A PO...what is tha...oh, is that a POST OFFICE?? I guess I still use them because our bills come to the house, and to wait in line until you die. I saw another post where someone said they 'developed their film', who does that any more?
