Transfer case shifting problem
I'm considering buying an 87 F 250, 4X4, 460CI, 5 speed manual transmission. The truck is clean and low mileage, drives great and best of all, the price is right.
My only problem with it is the transfer case will not shift into neutral or 4L. The four wheel drive works great in 4H and 2H works great as well. The 4X4 was very rarely used in this truck and I'm thinking that it is maybe a linkage problem. At least that is what I'm hoping.
Anybody know of something that could be wrong here that may be more serious that this?
Just thought I'd throw this out for the more knowledgable before I throw away a bunch of money.
Thanks!

this is a standard problem with the 4X4 transfer case linkage when it is not used or rarely used.
it can normally be fixed by removing the shifter, disassembling it, cleaning it real good, and lubricating it before reassembly.
i have had to do it on my 88 5 times so far.
That's probably all that's wrong with it but I would get it to shift before buying it. Now if the price is "right" I would take it "as is", small gamble its more than that.
A replacement shifter (if you can't free it up) cost about 100 bucks.
Removing the shifter as a unit to work on it is best, need to carefully open the rubber boots and soak it with penetrating oil. Flip it upside down, work from both ends.
