Starting issues after warm up

My 2005 Power Stroke has developed a new kink after driving it for a while. When I turn the truck off for any where from say 5 min. to 30 min. and go to restart it it tries to start and dies, then it will start and sound like it is running on 4 cylinders. A couple of times it has started and sounds like it is idling right but when I put it in gear it has no throttle response. Take it out of gear and you can rev the engine up. All my filters are new with-in 1000 miles, and I always use diesel additive (911). The only thing that I can think of is....we were driving out of state and almost ran out of fuel, this is actually when the problem started, my fuel gauge was showing about a 16th of a tank and my trip computer was telling me I had 35 miles left when I started having throttle response issues. I re-fueled at the closest station and it wouldn't restart right away. I had to crank the engine a half dozen times and it sounded weird when it was cranking over. Could I have gotten air in the fuel lines or does anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks

Tony G

Sounds more like a hpop problem. 05's were known for stc fitting leaks in the hpop system that matches your problem to a T. On another note, don't run your fuel so low. If the system starts sucking air it's very hard on your injectors.

Thanks for the info, but wouldn't the hpop set a code for check engine? I had no codes related to this, I did have a P0299 ( under driven turbo) code. I also noticed that there was a post on here about purging air from the system and I did that . I then took it out for a drive and shut it down twice and it restarted fine....that's not to say it wont happen again because it has been intermittent.

Thanks again

You will not see codes for hpop problems.

Check you're frame rail fuel filter. Make sure the cap o-ring is sealing properly. I've seen that cause your symptoms. But otherwise this is classic HPO leak issues.

When you say hpop are your referring to high pressure oil pump? I'm experiencing same or similar symptoms. My '03 starts no problem when it is cold. If it is somewhat warm the motor turns over, and takes longer for it to start. If I drive it for about 30 mins or more where the engine temperature is much warmer it doesn't want to start. I have approximately 53k miles on my current high pressure oil pump.

I should also have said I have 73,000 miles on my truck, the EGR was replaced under warranty at 43,000 miles.

I am talking High Pressure oil pump, yes.

It doesn't limit your problem to that though. Could be dummy plugs, stand pipes, injector top o-rings...

Thanks for the advice, if I find that it is the stand pipe or leaking O ring off the fuel rail would an average shade tree mechanic be able to do these repairs? I am average when it comes to working on gas engines but I haven't even changed the oil myself on the diesel!

911 is not intended as a regular additive. it is only to be used as a one shot deal, when you are having gelling issues and such. its actually kind of hard on the system, but clears a frosted up system. running on four cylinders, could be a bad combustion seal on an injector. quick test pull full pump fuse, remove top filter cover and have someone crank it over. if you get bubbles that's bad.

They aren't hard to do, and there are a lot of videos out there to help walk you through it. You need some tools, time, and mostly patience.
