Over the weekend my hubs did something funny. I can filp the switch they lock in for a min then unlock. At the time just manualy locked them in to get me out. Jacked up the front end tested it. They will lock in perfectly then after about 30sec-1min they will unlock. Any ideas?
Sounds like you may have a vacuum leak at one of your hubs. It is very easy to trouble shoot which side. Before you do that the first question is when they unlock do you hear the vacuum pump under the hood kick on.
I'll try that tonight see if I can hear it. Wasnt listening for it yesterday. Im thinking it may be my pass side hub. Are there o-rings to be changed or seals in the hub, or full hub?
I just had to do mine. My passenger side went out. Mostly my fault tho. There is a main seal on the 4WD shaft. It seals to the inside of the hub. Got mine at ford about 65 dollars. They go out often. There is also two more seals. A stock yellow one on the hub assembly itself which requires the assembly to be removed and a black seal on the outer locking hub. It is not a difficult job. If vacuum pump comes on here's how to TS. With key off disconnect Pass hub assembly vacuum line and plug it. Turn key on. Allow pump to cycle until it stops. Then put truck in 4H and wait. If pump does not cycle on the system is tight and your problem is on the pass side. If it does, repeat procedure for driverside. I do not suspect your vacuum switch only because it does initially open and allow hubs to engage.
Yeah it is located passenger side fender just behind the battery. It has a dome top about 5x8. The 4wd vaccum switch sits just to the front of it bolted to the fender well.
there are two cycles for the vacuum. It pulls a vacuum to engage the hubs, and then when you flip the dash switch to disengage it pulls another shorter and less intense vacuum. Details are on here somewhere if you search. it was very detailed and helpful
here they are
Ok so both hubs are unlocking. No pump cycling. Swapped relays. Checked voltage. All with no change. I unhooked vac line that goes to hubs and hooked it to the main vac line on the canister hubs lock perfect and don't unlock. So I'm assuming that means solinoid is bad right? Oh and starting truck back up low vac makes it run funky
I noticed this weekend when washing my truck i had locked my hubs earlier that day, when i turned them to auto soap bubbles came from the ford logo it looks like a small vent.
