I am trying to replace the power lock actuator on the driver's side of my '90 F150 XLT and cannot figure out how to get the old one out. I took the door panel all apart and can't seem to figure how it comes out. I also posted in the electronics forum. Thanks in advance for the help.
Where did you get your new actuator from? My local dealer wants 125 bucks for a new one, plus 63 if I have them put it in. I haven't found a parts place or a junkyard that has them either. Let me know how hard it is to do, as I really need to get it done.
Hey Sandrat, I got mine from a local ford dealer in NW VA (Shenendoah Ford). I didn't ask about installation. Maybe I will get a chance to take a look at it again to see the bolt/rivet. Does the rod that comes out of the top of it just slide out of the rest of the door handle/lock assy? Thanks again for the help.
...Doh! at www.fordpartsnetwork.com it was only $87 for the lock actuator! I have definately added that site to my favorites! Lately I have been buying lots of parts! Thanks for the link!
I haven't changed one in years but they are probably the same as the last one I changed. The rod is part of the actuator and will need to be unhooked from the lock assembly.
I have replaced several of these units by drilling out the rivet and replacing it with a bolt. Scratched my hands and arms, plus paid $60 and more for the actuator. Then I found this site:
http://www.installer.com/wires/#
They sell radio installation components, but down at the bottom of their listing is a UNIVERSAL actuator. It costs $15.00.
To install this univeral actuator, you will need to drill two small holes in the inside door wall, attach the actuator, then connect its shaft to the original one. Then you can cut the original shaft away from the original actuator. The new shaft has a clamp with set screws and will fit onto the original shaft. I am talking about the push rod that moves the lock when I say shaft.
I will try to get some pictures in the next few days, as I have to rebuild my window motor gearbox.
Thanks for the info Winford. I unfortunately have paid for the part from Ford. I will definately keep this in mind for the otherside (which I am sure will eventualy go too), and I would love to see some of the pics!
