F-350 compressor ?

Please excuse my ignorance. On the passanger side, under the hood of my F-350 there is a little compressor of some kind. What is it for? I can hear it running sometimes before I start up and even after the engin is off

It's creates vacuum to run certain accessories. Diesel engines require them as they make no vacuum unlike gas engines which do.
