My '99 v10 sd has 140,000 miles on it and just recently started to rattle while crusing at low speeds, 20 to 30 mph at 1800 to 2000 rpm. It seems to be getting worse as days go by. I,ve removed the inspection plate at the trans. and still rattles. The exhaust system is stock and tight. I've been under the truck with a rubber mallet trying to find the rattle with no luck. Its not heat shields and it doesnt rattle on bumps or rough roads just when I give it just a little gas. It sounds like a spinning coin on a metal table. Its very loud and turns heads. Its not constant. I think I hear it on the hiway too at about 2000 rpm and lightly accelerate from 65mph to 70. Anyone have an idea what it might be? Thanks.
I found the source of that sound yesterday and it was the heat shield on the cross-over of the headpipe. Two welds had split and allowed that shield to buzz very loudly. The splits were hairline and very hard to see but they open up and buzz when the pipe gets hot. I'll tac-weld those today. I tested my findinds by stuffing a piece of gasket material between the pipe and shield and drove around and the buzzing is definately gone. Case closed.
My truck was making this nasty rattle that was loud enough to hear over the non cat exhuast is turned out to be gravel caught in the heat shields on the Y pipe, took a while to find but after hitting them just right they rattled a little. Good Luck!
Are you the police? or official counter, or just a smart a$$ your self. I AM one of the few that love a bone stock truck. My truck is clean in and out.
I WILL, in the future, consider the mentality of the proof readers of this great site and refrain from statements that could be misunderstood as being a smart a$$ remark. I thank those who helped me and I hope MY solution will help others.
P.S. I found some small pebbles behind a couple of heat shields too. They do make noise dont they.
Got them out with a peice of wire and all is quiet under there. Thanks for the help. Good luck to all the new users.
Yes, I too considered YOU'RE MENTALITY when I replied the first time....and I was exactly right on target. You are a smarta$$. You coul have replied better to GAV10's suggestion Mr. I don't "butchcer" my truck bla bla bla....!!!
I removed the heat shields from the cat convertors on my ranger(I have a 250 sd as well) and now the underside of the truck is rusting out directly above the cats. Don't know if that had anything to do with the heat shields being gone, but that is the ONLY place it is rusting.
To GAV10, I truely apologize if I sounded to you like a smart A. I ment what I said in a joking kinda
way. Guess I should have used one of them happy faces like you did. I hope you didnt get mad at me like 203008581 did. Man she really flew off her handle at me. Guess I shouldnt have answered her the way I did. Again I'm sorry to you and all interested.
Max, I'm sure those cats get hot enough to do some damage to floorboards in time. Heatsheilds do work. Good luck.(insert happy face here)
No harm done. This is a bad thing about our written language. You don't get the emotion, and tone, on how it was said. We are all here to learn and share our one common interest, Ford Trucks.
I should have gave you more info. on my first reply. I welded my heat shields twice, they kept on cracking in the same place. Then I went to metal hose clamps trying to get rid of the rattling. Finally one day I had enough and cut them off. No more rattles
I have have replied to this earlier. I have been out of town for awhile.
I had the same thing happen to me recently on my Excursion. Same place. Right on the cross over exaust. I just bent it back a little with some needle nose pliers and no more noise. I will remove if and when it starts again. I thought at first it was something serious because it is loud at times. I just laid inder the Ex and listened carefully with the motor running and found it pretty quick. Just my 2 cents..............COACH
