Hey guys. Been gone a while but haven't forgot about this place. My 01 F450 has developed an issue lately. I ran her out of fuel a few days ago. Put fuel in, primed her up, good to go. Next day one of my guys is driving her and she acts up like fuel problem. He puts in new filter and all good. Thursday I was driving unloaded and suddenly she starts losing power and missing. I pull off road, look at fuel filter, drain bowl, she cranks right up and runs good.....for about 200 feet. Back to missing, low power, puffs of black smoke. Got home, changed oil, changed air filter (it was really bad) drained bowl, cranked up and perfect. Let her idle for 20 minutes while I clean up tools, etc. Go down the road and about a quarter mile she starts it again. It's like everything is fine and then something cuts fuel or something. I don't have a scanner, but SES light is on. Any ideas where to start? Thanks ahead of time. Y'all have saved my butt many times.
Drop the tank and clean or delete the mixing screens.
When you ran it out of fuel you sucked all the crap off the bottom of the tank and now your screens are plugged.
I have my tools out ready to do just that. I was just waiting to see if anybody else thought that was viable. Can I just delete the screens completely? Thanks for the quick responses guys.
And since you're just in Oregon, why not come give me a hand CSI? I'll treat you to a Louisiana seafood dinner. What time you think you can be here? LOL
Hmmmm,
SES light, runs fine while stationary but then acts up while driving...
Sounds like UVCH to me. Do you have any way to pull your codes? I've seen low fuel flow throw an SES light on Excursions but not so much on cab and chassis trucks. (although I suppose it's possible...)
When the engine is acting up, does it make a knocking noise...that also usually accompanies a low fuel condition.
i agree this sounds like what you guys just guided me thru on my 2000 but he is also getting a ses... i did not get ses light at any time while she was acting up pertaining to the need for the hutch mod. he also said he is getting black smoke... not white... which confuses me.
definitely worth siphoning out the dank, dropping it, and at least take a look.
after 400k miles, my tank was pretty much sparkling clean... but my fuel pickup foot was a wadd of varnsh wandering around inside the tank for who knows how long. po said they never could drive it under 1/4 tank... go figure.
good luck man, and let us know when you get it figured out...
Well I dropped tank and the screen was off the pickup tube. Tank was remarkably clean with no water signs. Only a little debris. At least now I know what's going on in the tank. Will do Hutch mod. Now I'm considering UVCH too. Haven't done cent mod yet. Any more guesses? I appreciate the help.
After reading thru the Hutch mod info, I'm curious about the fine screens inside the mixing chamber. Think I'll whack it open and give her a look. Won't need it anyway. I'll report back when I find something.
