You fellas are spot on! I pulled the mixer and cracked it open. Holy Moses! The little screens in there were packed solid with goo. I don't see how it was running at all. Why would a design engineer put filter screens that small in an in-accessible place? Anyhow, I'll try to get some pics for ya. Maybe save someone else some pain and suffering.
OK guys. Did the Hutch mod and out everything back together. Truck started right up and then went back to the SOS. Took it to a mechanic and he says scan points to a bad IDM. It is kinda freaky that it will run fine at idle sometimes and then go to crap all of a sudden. Then smoke and no power, missing, etc. Gimme some ideas fellas!
check for another filter in line somewhere between the tank and fuel bowl... i found one... and replacing it finally fixed my problem.
i figure it was a combination on my truck... in doing the hutch mod i used the trucks fuel pump to help me get the tank empty... plus it had been on there for at least 4 years.
it was hidden pretty good and didnt even find it till i knocked some of the grime off of it.
i didnt install mine yet... but i have it and its on my list... but get you a pressure gauge on your fuel system... it should tell you a lot about whats going on... if you have good pressure... then your issue might just be what your mekanik said...
other than that... tried wiggling your uvcc's (under valve cover connectors)
try that while she is running like dookie...
beyond that my experience on this matter is exhausted...
definitely let us know brother! could get one of us off the side of the road one day...
Rusty,
Check the plugs going into the valve cover harness to see if the wiring insulation is breaking off and causing some issues - similar to what happens when a bunch rubs against the valve cover and occasionally shorts out. My '02 had that issue and some 'liquid tape' fixed that quickly.
Thanks guys! Will look for wires that are suspect. Y'all are life savers. BTW, I found a used IDM from a wrecked truck that belongs to a buddy. Plugged it in and guess what-- same ole same ole. Y'all were right about that not being the problem.
Doesn't black smoke = getting too much fuel and not burning it all??
It means incomplete combustion, whatever the reason. A funky injector can do it. Also, the other cylinders are working really hard when one bank goes down and can cause black smoke.
