6.0 wont start ater warmed up

i have an 03 f350 with a 6.0 and last christmas we got it and the rings were out of the oil pump so i took it to ford and had them go through it. i know the mechanic and know it was done good and right i had him go through everything. its got 328,000 on it but he said it was clean and looked good. it had a new crank sensor put in it then too. here lately if i drive it and then shut it off it will not start again. just cranks. give it about 30 min or so and it will fire right up. the truck runs really good idles and sounds good. i have no idea wat is wrong with it. a sensor maybe? idk. i took it back to ford and they screwed me around on it. so i would like to fix it myself if its just a sensor or something simple. Any help is appreciated thanks Justin

It starts and runs when cold but shuts down warm, maybe a tech can chime in. sounds like High Pressure Oil Pump but maybe something simpler. Can you get codes read atleast before throwing parts at it?

We had an '05 450 at work that used to do the same thing, it took three trips into the diesel doc at the local stealership before the problem was fixed. I wasn't there when they picked it up the last time, but the dealership said it was a pin hole in an oil manifold. Before they got it fixed the guy that was driving the truck wouldn't shut it off during the day; fire it up in the morning an leave it running until the end of the day...otherwise he was stuck where ever he shut it down.

Just had my 05 repaired. It was doing the same thing. It was the high pressure oil pump fitting o-ring. When the oil is colder and thicker it will start up. Heat the oil up and it can not make enough oil pressure to fire it up. To much oil bypass across the o-ring I guess. Mine was fixed under warranty. Not sure where its at or how much work there is to it. Hope this helps and good luck.

One important thing about the high pressure oil pump fitting o-ring failure.
Make sure that the engine is checked hot. When the engine is cold it may make the required pressure to start. Mine checked cold was in normal limits. Hot it would not register above 225psi and had difficulty starting or would not start.

when the O rings went out last time it would pop and not wana run over 2,000 rpms. but it still runs like hell pulls good and everything so i would not think it would be the O rings in the pump. but if you run it to operating temp shut if off and wait anywhere from 10-30 mins it starts right back up. and the engine is still pretty hot then. I called the guy that worked on it last time he said it sounds like a bad O ring on the oil rail or a bad injector O ring but if that was the case i would say it would not run like it does.

Agree with the above but could also be the stc fitting.

6.0 problem

Whats up? I had the same problem. If you didn't fix your problem this a little advice on troubleshooting. On the right side of the engine unscrew the (icp) from the valve cover and hook up a air compressor with regulator put under 100 psi of air. It will push the oil out the high pressure oil manifold. You will hear a air leak under the left or right side valve cover. When you hear it remove the valve cover and reapply the air again. The air leak will be a lot louder. The oring broke on my high pressure oil manifold. When removing the manifold make sure the oil tube in the rear of the manifold is removed also. Take the two hex head bolts off the top of the manifold. One of the hex bolts will have a cut oring. I recommend changing all orings. If you have any questions my shop # is 337-898-8989. Hours are 8-5. Thanks, marlin4549.

The hpop design was changed for the 2005 MY, so the STC fitting only affects 05-07 trucks. On 03-04 trucks it's usually the o-rings that fail and cause the above issue.

The procedure posted by marli9n4549 is the correct way to diagnose such a failure.

Great info! My 05 f250 6.0l just started acting up.

You guys are really great. I'm just out of my extended warranty and my truck just start the no start when hot. It's getting fuel to the secondary fuel filter also. Would the stc fitting, hpop o ring and Manifold o rings cause a emissions check engine light to come on also? Oh ya just cleaned my egr valve it needs new o rings also. Thinking should i just change all these seals, fitting and o rings at the same time? They dont sound to expensive. I'm no mechanic but will be doing the work myself because, well, I'm flat broke. Got to thank all you guys that take time to help us not so knowledgeable truck owners between this site and you tube I'm very confident to take the challenge on. My wife thanks you as well. Now my wife's cousin lives 1 mile away and is a ford diesel mechanic was no help at all, says ah just bring it in to the dealer I, haven't any idea. Well let's just say he won't be fishing on my boat again. Or I can charge him $85.00 per hour like the dealer would. Lazy ," A ". Thanks for nothing
