needing some help here. i recently purchased a 99 light duty F250. great looking truck but, i went to pryor ok this past weekend and took my camper and the truck pulled like a 4 banger datsun! terrible gas mileage and absolutely no power. couldn't get over 55 with it on the floor. the truck is a 99 F250 4x4 off road, extended cab, lariet, with the 5.4, 4r100 automatic and 3.31 non limited slip, 10.25 rear. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
The 3.31 gears are what is killing your truck while pulling a load. You need to regear to 4.10 or 4.30 gears. You have a bad combination for pulling anything.
I had suspected a gear swap was a large part of the problem. I had a 95 Bronco with the 351 and took the same trip last year to pryor with the same camper and pulled it 70 up the turnpike no problem. This nicer newer truck, 55 steady with half throttle and 60 on a downhill slope. I am going to try the gear swap and see how that does. I also found a pretty big vacuum leak. Fixed that and seems to run better but still not the power it should have. Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated.
YES...a gear swap is necessary. As mentioned...either the 4.10 or 4.30 help. Also...when towing...make sure to keep the O/D off. Keeping the 5.4L in an rpm range it prefers.
ran the whole way with the O/D off. i'm really thinking the 4.10's would be good for me. i drive about 40 miles a day, back and forth to work plus my camper is only a 23 footer about 6000 lbs or so.
just out of curiousity, me and a buddy were talking and we were wondering how bad would it be to take a supercharger off of a lightning and put on a NA engine?
Replace the fuel filter. If that doesn't help, go to a GOOD muffler/exhaust shop and ask them to check the cat. converter to see if its plugged. My first suspicion is the filter, however.

Heck...even the 3.73 would be a huge improvement over 3.31.
Things to consider before the gear swap...and that is usually tires. If you are going to keep stock OEM sizing, then the 3.73 or 4.10 will do fine. If you are going to increase the tire size...then 4.30 will be the way to go.
Running 265/75/16. Had 315/75/16 but thought that was a big part of the problem. Also changed the fuel filter before the trip and have a 40 series flowmaster on it with more than enough flow and sound but I'll get the cats checked. Thanks.
