over heating?

got the 351w running in my 86 f150 but it has a bad over heating problem. the anti freeze was just boling out the over flow tank so i thought my new thermostat might be bad so i removed the thermostat to see if it would stop the over heating but nothing anybody have any other ideas/

Some background info is needed, is it a fresh build, used? Is the timing set correctly?

Matt is right - we can't diagnose, at least accurately, w/o information on what you have, what's been done to it, and under what conditions it overheats. I say the latter because I had a 351W with a leaking head gasket that would overheat, but only if it was driven 40 MPH or faster. So, tell us everything - we can eliminate the extraneous.

You state it is overheating but then you mention it is blowing coolant into the overflow. Is it actually overheating or just pushing water into the overflow?

These crossflow radiators are never completely full so when you fill it to the top, it will blow some into the overflow naturally as it heats up and expands.

You mention replacing the thermostat, did you get it installed in the correct orientation? With the sensing bulb/spring toward the engine?

Did this just start happening out of the blue or something that has been building up? Was there some event that trigger this like you were pulling something in the heat or something else out of the normal that spurred this on?

What does your gage do? when you start it up, does it just heat up and overheat or does it slowly build and overheat in certain condidtions?

Do you see steam/water coming out of your tail pipe?

Do you see water in your oil or is your oil level high?

Does your coolant have a gas smell to it?

Ouch! That makes my head hurt. Waaaay to many words with essentially no punctuation or capitalization. Can't get my head around it, or maybe I should say I won't try. Good luck, and ciao.

Well if you are saying everything is new and there are no leaks anywhere, internal or external, then it sounds like you have a water pump problem.

with the engine cold, take the radiator cap off, start the engine and let it warm up. Do you see a good flow of water going through the radiator? When the thermostat starts to open, to you feel the upper hose heating up? Do you feel the entire radiator getting hot?

Lots of ways to check for good flow, this is one way.

Cooling system is simply. If your system is tight (no leaks), you have good flow and a good heat sink (radiator) then there shouldn't be a problem.

If you have a good radiator and good flow though it, then there is a chance you are putting too much heat into the system, via a head gasket issue or coolant passage leak in the head or block.

Also make sure you are getting good air flow. Do you have a good fan (clutch style preferrably), have a fan shroud and no restrictions?

If the wrong water pump and/or fan are installed - e.g. ones for a serpentine system, or a serpentine pulley system has been installed without the required reverse-rotation water pump & fan - overheating will occur.

I would do a leak-down test and verify there aren't any bubbles in the radiator.
