point well made. my thoughts were if you were *going* to do something
like this, a solution reversible with a software update is better than a
fix that takes half a day, and a fair bit of money.

Unfortunately, the person that you are mentioning it too, it may not be a given. I have read too many posts on here that explicitly said that it wasn't illegal to do as long as you didn't have emission testing, so that makes me believe that the myth is alive and well.
I would like to think a lot more things with a given and not needing to be mentioned, but not in today's times.
