hey, i have a 74 f250. my 4wd lever in the cab sticks and/or will not lock. question..... is this an ongoing problem or can it be fixed for good within the gear box?
Mine did that also. I removed the whole lever and linkage, cleaned it all up, and added a grease zerk on the lever pivot point. Adjusted the linkage so it had full travel. Had to use a little heat to get the linkage adjustment freed up. Works like new now. . .
The shift lever retainer cap has two notches, is retained by two pins that protrude from the shift tower.
To remove this cap, it must be pressed down and held down while turning it...to remove it.
Some peeps are unaware, use pliers to remove it, which tears out one or both of the notches. When this occurres, the lever cannot be locked in place, will flop around.

He said "4wd lever" so I am pretty sure he means transfer lever, not 4 spd trans shift lever.
74 E Follow everyone's elses advice on the transfer lever repair, but if you are working on the manual transmission ND advice is right on, like always.
