MPG Gain

So a COP failed on my 2008 @ 84,000 KM a few weeks ago. Being a little scared by Internet spark plug stories, I asked the shop to just change the plugs and tune it while they changed the COP.

Being an OCD record keeper, I've observed 12.5 MPG in mixed driving. Now, after the tune, I'm seeing 13.5 and possibly 13.75. Could this be right? My driving habits have not changed.

The older the plugs get, the less efficient they are, along with a bad coil is wasting fuel in that cylinder.

As "an OCD record keeper" can we presume MPG remained the same leading up to when "a COP failed"?

Of course a failed, as in Dead As A Doornail, COP wastes fuel, but a marginal COP might go undetected? Enough on "an OCD record keeper" to winnow out prior 1-1.25 MPG changes?

"Curious, doesn't FORD/Canada say an '08 should go 100,000 miles on spark plugs? If so, the "84,000 KM" is only ~52,200 miles & wouldn't necessarily point to "The older the plugs get, the less efficient they are"?

These engine management systems are 'adaptive' meaning they automatically make incremental changes to compensate for normal aging.

Would be more interested in what the shop did to "tune it" since there normally isn't much to do? In particular 'The older the air filter gets, the less efficient'.

My plugs were bad before 100,000, happens running poor quality fuel.
