I Have a 1986 Ranger W/2.0 eng. 1Brl Carb. Man. Trans.
I installed a rebuilt smog pump and new Check Valve.
After intallation I Now have a Backfireing problem when I release excellorator to shift gears. I Checked Timing, It's OK. Have not yet
replaced vacume switch. (With belt disconected from pump backfire all but disapears). Any Suggestions.
Not sure where you got the pump, but take it back and have it replaced. Bolted to the pump there is a 'diverter' valve. When the diverter does not function properly, you get a backfire (usually more of a rumble) on deceleration.
I might add this thought, check the vacuum and hoses going to the diverter. The vacuum that controls the diverter could also cause the problem.
