Can replacing the spark plugs and wires, but not the cap and rotor make an engine backfire?... Well anyway it feels like a backfire. I guess its more like a pop. I already checked my pcv valve, my egr valve, and my air pump... everything's running fine, and i didn't have this problem til i changed my plugs and wires. And i know the plugs are good and pre-gapped... Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
A couple engines are persnickety about their plug wire routing. The last two on the drivers side need to cross at a 90 degree angle so they don't induce firing in the other plug.
Another possibility is putting the wires in the cap in the wrong order, or putting the wires on the wrong plug. I would suggest checking the firing order against the wire setup. It's easy to do...
What engine do you have?

I would also check the cap for a hairline crack- spray WD-40 on the inside of the cap, if it runs great, then you have either contamination or a small crack that is not visable.
did you replace them one at a time or all at once? i would double check your firing order.
i had a friend do them all at once on his cavalier because he "could remember where they all went just fine". after he got done and it wouldn't run i had to swap 2 of the wires on the 4 popper around.
