I have the PSD in my Excursion. I get about 14-15 in town depending on the time of year and 18-20 mpg on the highway @ 75mph. My mpg's were more consistent with the old Firestone Steeltex's that I had. Now I have the Revo 2's.
My pickup has the V-10 and has about 190K on it. It uses a little oil but still runs strong. I get about 11 in town and 13 on the highway, that is with 4.30 gearing.
I've calculated mine over a few tanks, and can truly say I get an average of 10-11 mpg from my V10.
I drive it daily to school and back 5 days a week(22 miles round trip) and to do some errands after school and on the weekends, I can usually go about 1.5-2 weeks per fill up however I have started to fill up once I reach the quarter mark, so that I can actually try to fill the tank.
Although I personally would have loved a PSD, I know that I could not afford the maintenance that goes along with it.
I've just recently went over 100k miles and it's still running strong. Only thing I'd think could make it a little better is a more free flowing exhaust to go along with my K&N intake, and possibly 4.30 gears instead of the current stock 3.73's (my dads F-250 has 4.30's and he can easily coast at 50mph, and he can keep up with traffic without always being on the gas, but has more torque when needed). Also wanted to add that this is also with LT285/75R16 (32.8" x 11.5ish) size tires instead of the stock 265's so that's definitely another factor affecting the mpg's
my 6.0 has never dropped below 18 mpg and i have tried pretty hard to burn fuel fast. started out stock and now im slightly modified and get a consistent 19-20 mixed slightly more highway use mpg.
always hand calculated.
The better diesel mpg is a wash because of the 30-40 cent premium we pay. The diesel needs more attention than the gasser. I have a V10 in my van & the 6.0 in the ex and the diesel has way better pulling capacity. If you can save money & do the maintenance yourself & there are a lot of good people with good anwsers on this fourm!
i've had 3 V10 excursions (all 3:73 geared 4x4's) with a combined 45k miles in the last 3 years, all have been amazingly reliable and in my opinion the MPGs are not bad considering the size and weight and my crazy driving style.
8-10 city 10-14 highway.
most of my driving is around town, where i see 8.5-9.5mpg the most.. sometimes more sometimes less but thats avg. some of this has to do with my tune with my SCT3 tuner which is a extreme performance tune with MPG not being a concern. stock it did better!
See my sig... been there done that. If you need the extra oomph of the diesel then get one. If not then go with the V10. Cost wise the V10 is cheaper all around. My X had a bad engine when I bought it (for about $5300), but a brand new tranny. I replaced the bad engine with one with about 90k miles on it for $2100 installed. Oil changes every 4k+ mi only cost $45 with Mobil1 synthetic (7qts with filter) vs prior diesels with 12+qts oil, oil filter and fuel filter every other oil change.
Driving from Iowa out to Oregon over I-90 with the hills, mountains, and some head wind pulling our travel trailer at 6k we averaged about 7-8 mpg (always calculated) on "ethanol blends". Without the trailer I am averaging about 13 mpg with mixed driving, but I am a conservative driver.
A WHOPPING 8 MILES PER GAL.!!! Why may you ask? well that would be because we are probably losing half a gal on a steep incline or hill at every damn street-light here in HI on the rock I live on. Oh and did I mention that for super (only thing I use or else the engine will ping) is at lil over $5.00 a gal.
My '05 V-10 gets an average of 12-13 MPG when solo with a high so far of 14.5 for a tank. When towing our 9-11k lb ToyHauler at 60-65 MPH we have seen 7-8.5 MPG, That is with the stock 3.73 gears and near stock size tires. I'm soon swapping in 4.88 gears and going to a taller tire, hopefully that will increase the towing mileage some as it shouldn't downshift from OD as frequently. If you do tow heavy try to find a 4.30 ratio rig or figure in the cost of a regear into the price.
I love my V-10 and would not hesitate to buy another.
My '01 PSD gets 12-14 city and 18-20 on highway and 12-14 while towing. I just got a DP Tuner (hooked up this morning) to help with some power and hopefully some fuel economy. I wouldn't trade my diesel for anything.
