Properly inflated tires and staying below 70 on the highway. And I add 16 oz of Diesel Kleen every tank. I expect the tuner will add more mpg and pay for itself within a year.
And just for the record, I keep track of each tank and it has been pretty consistent for the 2.5 yrs I've owned the truck.
I took a trip over this past long weekend, fully loaded with passengers and cargo, but not towing anything. Got 20 mpg in my 6.0 X, kept the cruise on between 65-70 mph, never went over 70. I also add 16 oz of Diesel Kleen with every tank.
I've put 147K on my 05 V10 Excursion 4x4 (had 22K when it came to me so 169K total), now with 4.30 gear and 35" tires (same as the stock 265's and 3.73s) overall average has been 8-10 in town and 12-13 on the interstate. Towing the car hauler average goes down to about 7 depending on head winds. The vehicle has banks headers and exhaust and their ottomind chip, that's coming out for a 5 star. Overall this Ex has done everything I ever asked it to. I can run it on regular, although always use premium when towing to avoid the dreaded ping. It uses about a quart of oil between changes running full synthetic Motorcraft since I bought it.

How do you like the 4.30's?
I really wanna look into those or 4.56's even for my 285's or if I go up to 34-35's.
Wanting a little more get up when having to speed up on freeway on ramps etc and for towing our toybox
My 04 6.0 3.73 gears and stock tire size averages 14-16 city, 16-18 highway, and 11-13 towing 21000#cgvw @ 70-85mph. Hand calculation and the trailer is a ten foot high 8.5x30 with the sct tsx canned towing tune. Although I only got 6-7mpg when my pcm took a leave of abscence.lol

Reason: to add information
Proper tuning, when i was getting about 15 mpg stock. Then with my 1st 120 hp tune went up to 18 mpg! Then down 2 mpg with the power max, then back up with my ficm tuning
2000 2WD 7.3l Excursion - I do not do much around town driving, other then towing, my worst tank is 17 mpg. I usually average about 19 mpg per tank. I can get 22 - 23 on the highway if I keep the RPM's around 1900. Towing MPG; I have a heavy foot when towing and usually run close to the speed limit, towing in the CO mountains, 5k lb travel trailer 12 - 13 mpg. I could do better if I slowed down up the hills but I like going the speed limit. My truck as 200k on it. I have owned it since 150k with the only repairs other them maintenance being replacing a UVCH and fuel bowl o-rings. I love my truck
