Could anyone tell me what size Ring and Pinion I have in the front and rear differential of my truck? Its a 97 F150 4x4 5 speed. I want to swap gears for a lower set... maybe a 4.11 or 4.56 if its available (5.13's would be nice )
Thanks for any help guys
Mike
Also if you know any websites that offer those gears it would be helpful
You should have a tag on your axles that tells you what size gears you have. Usually, it's a strip of metal attached to one of the pumpkin bolts, about 2-3 inches long and stamped with the ratio.
http://www.ring-pinion.com/home.shtml What size tires are you running now? I would venture youre probably running either 3.55 or 3.73 gears. What are your plans for this truck that would involve 5.13s?
I have a 3.55 gear ratio now, I want to find out what type of gears I need (Dana 44, 8.8", 9", 12 Bolt Corporate etc.) for the front and rear end so I can see what ratio's are available. Again its a 97 F150 4x4 w/5speed manual.
I'm planning on a Skyjacker 6 inch lift, with a set of 35" mud tires on a 17 or 18 inch rim. Right now the truck has 285/75R16 BFGoodrich Mud Terrain K/Os, but the stock tires were tiny. So a 4.11 or 4.56 would put me about were I need to be (RPM wise) at cruising speeds with the larger mud tires.
Im not 100%, but I know up to year 96, it was the Dana 44 in front, and 8.8" in the rear. I think thats probably the setup you have now. What does your front pumpkin look like? I know on my D44 front, it says D44 on it. As for gearing, I might go with the 4.56s with the 5 speed. Get that low end grunt to get you moving. I know 4.10s are good for 35's and 4 speed/OD. Check this link out. You can determine what rpm range you want to be in.
Another thing I forgot to mention, you will probably have to change the internal carrier of the diff. I think the one in there now will only accomodate up to 3.73.
Admittedly, I'm new to the undercarriage of my 2003 5.4 SC.
My truck has a larger rear rear than some.
A friend told me the 4.6L motors have that smaller rear.
Mine has the larger offset (trapezoidal) shape rear cover, and staggered Rancho shocks.
I know my truck has the 3.73:1 ratio with limited slip.
A friend says this is a 9.75" ring.
Can anyone outline if this is a "Ford" or a "Dana" rear.?
If the 5.4 ring gear is larger than the 4.6, does it have a larger matching ring in the front differential as well? (or does Ford do the nmath to make the ratios match where the rubber meets the road)
The front axle geometry seems the same on 5.4s and 4.6s.
I'm puzzled, just trying to educate myself.

ps... I've always liked big rears..that have limited slip
(can we say that here?)
