I have a 1999 Explorer Sport with 114,000 miles. Recently my O/D light has begun to flash and while the truck shifts the RPM's are extremly high. I took the truck to my mechanic and there were no codes on the truck. He thought it might be a transmission problem or the computer going in the computer. Does any one have a better suggestion on which it might be?
Yeah, it means you have missed three fluid changes and the trans is self destructing. LOL
Just kidding, have to give you a hard time.
But seriously, sometimes new fluid can go a long way. But before you go out and make things worse, there are some simple things you should know. First off, when I say get new fluid, I don't mean take it to a quick lube place and have them hook their flush machine up to it. That would likely be a death sentence for the trans. I mean, drop the pan, replace the filter, inspect the pan and filter to make sure that there are no metal bits in the pan. This is s sign of hard part damage. Then once the pan and fluid have been drained, disconnect the return line on the trans cooler, and pump one a quart of fluid, add a quart of new to the trans, and repeat until either new fluid starts to come out, or until you are on your 12th quart of trans fluid.
The correct fluid is MerconV, not a multi-trans formula, or a generic fluid.
If the transmission has always had its fluid changed on 20-30K mile intervals, a dynamic fluid exchange as outlined above is not needed, but if it had been serviced that often, it would be unlikely that you would be having a problem at just 114K miles.
