yes you would. But there is no benefit from it as it is a smaller inducer Turbo. Has a small exhaust side. Is a vgt Turbo so a controller of some sort would be needed.
Iirc its on like a 56mm or maybe even 54mm inducer. Our stock charger is 60mm. A good upgrade would be an s366 Borg Warner charger. But would require a t4 mount or if you good at fabbing make your own mount.
He351 is a variable vane charger off of commonrail cummins. Hx35 was on 1994 to 1998 12valve. Iirc the 24valve had an hx40.
The 8 blade HX-35's came on the 12v and I believe the 7 blade compressor HX-35 came on the 24v VP44 trucks. I think there was also the HY-35 that came on the '01-'02 automatic trucks that had a non divided turbine housing. Not sure that I've ever seen an HY-35 before, but I've heard about them.
The HE341 came out on the Common rails in '03 and '04 (Smaller than HE351, but don't have specs right now), then they switched to the HE351 in '04.5 and later models.
I think the HE351 had a 60mm inducer on the compressor wheel, but the exhaust side was tiny... I think the turbine wheel was somewhere around 60mm and the turbine housing was around 9cm.. The HE351 is NOT a VGT turbo.
The HE351VE is the VGT version that comes on the 6.7L Cummins.
Personally, I wouldn't bother with any of those turbos on a 7.3L. They just aren't big enough. The HE351VE might be big enough when the VGT is fully open, I don't know, but I wouldn't bother trying it. There are much better options to swap to such as the HX50 or HX55, H2E, and of course an S300 or an S400..
There is a thread going on another forum about the Dmax turbos and retrofitting them on the 7.3L. I've never seen a Dmax turbo in person, but they sound like they could be a good fit if one could get the VGT working on it. The stock Dmax turbo is a VGT Garrett 4094 and has a 66mm compressor wheel. There are also a bunch of performance upgrades out there for it. I think if i was going to try a turbo off of another light duty diesel platform or if I was going to try VGT, I would try that Dmax turbo.
