The fuel pressure gauge was going to zero and back on some turns, so before a 300 mile trip we pulled the dip stick and it was bone dry. Added 3 quarts and it was barely reading. So I told my friend to start it and then it was reading WELL above full.
Any ideas? Was it low on oil? Do these burn oil? It's not leaking.
When was the last time you changed the oil?? About how many miles? I have a 2000 v10 and mine has 150,xxx miles on it and i burn about 3/4 of a quart a month or roughly 1000 miles,
Id do an oil change if i were you and start montoring it every 2 weeks or so and id use the lucas oil treatment as well.
I would do the change, oil changes are not the thing you want to neglect, esp with a v10.. Also i would change your pcv valve, its like 10 bucks and its on tve valve cover and very simple to change , it might help reduce the consumption problem, only use motocraft brand though
All engines burn oil. Or at least they should.... There has to be a microscopically thin layer of oil on the cylinder walls to properly lubricate the rings.
In addition, the more volatile components in engine oil will evaporate over time.
So oil level will drop over time. The real question is how much?
Some seem to lose as little as a quart over 10K miles. That is wonderful.
But some lose as much as a quart in 1K miles or even 500 miles. Testing has proven that will not hurt anything as long as it is refilled regularly. And if you think about how many combustion cycles occur in 1000 miles and figure out how much oil is burning per cycle, you'll understand why you won't see smoke or have any drivability issues.
If your going through 1-3 gallons in 5000 miles ya got an issue!!
We been doing that for almost 20k miles before Dad got worry about reliable since it start give major issues which he neglected to do like rear brake or transmission fluid plus rot out.
