Can or should I use the V in my 1990 f150, 4.9, automatic, 80,000 miles? I can get the Castrol V for $1.25 at a closing parts store or should I stick with the DextronIII/Mercon ?
I would stick with the manufacturer's recommendation.
I don't know why, but Ford recommends different products for different models. My 98 Explorer requires V, but the 2001 Escape specifies NOT to use it (uses III instead).
I know there are differences in Type F, MIII, and mV. I have vehicles which use each of them. I believe the friction characteristics are different, and would not want to risk causing a problem I was trying to prevent by using the wrong product.
I do believe, however that you should change the total fluid every 30K miles, as specified.
