Question Hey Stewart_H!

A while back I told you I will ask stupid questions from time-to-time. Well, here goes one of them........... How do you get the coal to come out of the exhaust? And what causes it to do that?

Not saying I want mine to do that, just want to know about it....

not enough air to fuel. it is unburnt fuel. if you want yours to do it put a bag over you air filter.
it is just a wast of fuel and a power loss.

I don't think it would be wise to put a bag over your air filter..jmho

correct. please do not put a bag over your intake.

the "wallmart bag mod" only works on Dodge cummings trucks.

Brian, most tuners nowadays create their tunes to smoke as little as possible, if at all, because the last thing enthusiasts want is to bring attention to our hobby in a negative way.

But to answer your question, like Snake stated, coal (black smoke) = unburned fuel. Restricting the air will do two things, make you look like a fool, and make you look like a tool.

Just a heads up bro.

Haha! Nice quote. Yeah, I'm not looking to do it, just wanted to know how and why. I see on videos when guys got their trucks up on a rack, showing off their HP all of a sudden they start blowin' coal

That instance is generally when they load the dyno(rack) Smoke should be tried to be kept at the track and dyno, off the streets. Usually high HP tunes will smoke when fuel is demanded before the turbo spools up fully to clean it up. In the instances of the track, dyno and sled pulls, smoke under high load situations in my eyes can be ok. Keeping it off the streets is my big concern.

That's something completely different.

Al's got that covered with his quote below.

I'm not saying rolling coal is stupid, I'm saying restricting your intake to make it blow black, is stupid.

My race tunes will blow black until, like Al stated, the turbo fully spools and cleans up the exhaust. Even my 80 econo tune will do that if I'm low in the RPM band and I give it a moderate amount of fuel, but not enough to kick down the trans.

I agree about the smoke. I dont roll coal, I haze.. Little puffs when I'm towing and changing lanes or on hills etc. My DD and performance tunes dont hardly smoke at all.

But if its at a track or event, then thats okay.
