Hello I have read a bunch of things on your forums and I have some very important questions. I recently (2 days ago) bought a 91 explorer as a spare ride. It's has 140k looks to be in immaculate condition til you get to some things I've discovered under the hood. I am not some master mechanic chick I've done some oil changes, tune ups, sensor changes etc. However I really need some advice......
1. I believe truck is running hot however the only gauge that does not work is the temp gauge. I have pulled the wire grounded it and presto gauge went straight to hot. So I will replace that sensor or whatever its proper name is.
2. After checking fluids only one concerns me. The overflow looks a wee bit milky to me. But I do not have smoke from exhaust as if there is coolant burning. I plan to drain it tomorrow replace temp sensor and refill with 50/50.
****** will it get milky again without me driving it? I don't want to mess it up more if it is a blown head gasket.
3. It has a tick like a "hey I'm low on oil tick" but its not. So I added some Lucas oil to try to extra lube up lifters.
I can tell no change in sound or if its very small.
The explorer does drive nicely however. Good acceleration, shifting, etc.
Any help is overly appreciated and any questions you may have in trying to help I will try to answer promptly.
Will do thanks. Replaced sending unit and temp gauge is working. Hoping to get radiator flushed tomorrow.
Drain the coolant and secure in a container... antifreeze/coolant is deadly toxic.
Get a flush kit and install the T into the return cooler line from the cabin heater. Place the cabin temp control on full hot.. Connect a garden hose and run until the water runs clear. Start the engine and run until the thermostat opens, then open the garden hose again..
If you are ****, remove the top hose (rad )and fold/crimp, flush again, this will back flush the radiator.
Drain all water from system. Mix 50/50 coolant and distilled or RO water (not tap).
Fill engine with mix, run to burp air and top again when cool...
Clean up any residue, kills kids and animals.... Philip
