Red died diesel is for offroad use only. No state or Federal taxes. In my state (Oregon) it is a $10,000 fine if they catch you using it in a highway truck.

So pretty much it's cheaper and that's the only difference? To help farmers out?

Yes. Regular diesel has road taxes to help pay for highways, and off-road diesel (red diesel) is used by construction, farm, and heating fuel, so no taxes. There is no difference in the fuel itself.

Hypothetically speaking, say someone recently purchased a diesel truck that has red diesel in it, it's what the seller was running in it. Would the purchaser of the truck simply use the red diesel up and start filling it up with regular diesel and thus have nothing to worry about?

it will eventually run out of dye. usually takes a week or so in the dump trucks filling the tanks every day.
(100 gallons per day in 150 gallon total capacity)
but the filter usually stays discolored forever.

This is correct. I just want to reiterate it. Many people think that red diesel is still 500ppm LSD. It is not. Now ALL diesel imported, manufactured and sold in the US must be USLD.

The only difference is the dye and the price.
