I'm pulling my camper going up a big hill. I swap lanes to pass a dump truck. I pass him while making her whistle a little. Then boom white smoke. There's a little bit of oil on the driver side valve cover . My in law says its the rear main seal because the seal is sticking out. I had heard these where about flawless . I suppose this is a stock seal and there is 174k on the vehicle.
So, you pulled the transmission and flexplate/flywheel and can visually see the rear main sticking out? The seal is held in place by a retainer if I remember correctly..
Have you checked your turbo for excessive shaft play?
A rear main seal leak wouldn't put oil on your valve cover. I would look more closely around your turbo. Especially if you were under a load, hammer down, etc.
Look in the valley. If you see oil pooled up in there, clean it out really well, start the motor, and look in there with a flashlight, mirrors, clean paper towels to find out where the leak is coming from. It could be from a few areas including the turbo pedestal, HPOP, and the lines going to it.
Take a look at your turbo (with engine off). See if the wheel spins freely and check for excessive shaft play.
Also look at your intercooler boots and make sure they are connected and not torn. (I wonder what would happen if one of the IC boots popped off while under heavy load?...Would it make some white smoke for a bit?)
