However its much easier to check the dipstick then pull the plug on the HPO res... (I'm only saying this to be an ****, because I am never wrong even if your right, which your not, but if you were you would still be wrong because I am never wrong...)

Didn't the OP say there was only a little bit of oil on the valve cover?

I was thinking the "boom" might have been an intercooler boot blowing off, but that wouldn't cause a no-start

How much white smoke did you see? If it was a cloud, then you probably blew the seal out of turbo and the oil went out the exhaust. Been there, done that. Like already said, no or low oil will prevent starting, your in law hasn't seen your rear main seal, not on a causual inspection. A blown HPO line will coat your hood liner and lubricate pretty much everything under the hood and do a pretty good job of it and like said, in only a few seconds.
