rear seal

Sorry about the vagueness. It;s the rear main oil seal, and the truck is a 2-wheel drive.

Thanks

Thanks

If you have fluid dripping from the bellhousing area it may NOT be a main seal. Look in the valley of the engine for fluid. Fluids in the valley will run down the back of the engine and appear to have a rear main seal leaking.

If the valley is dry it may be a rear main seal leaking or a front trans seal, either way, the tranny needs to be removed. The rear main seal is in a seperate plate that bolts to the back of the engine.

Not trying to hiijack here, but could overfilling the oil crankcase casue leakage out the bottom? Mine leaks and and I see no evodence in the valley that it is coming from up top. I was going to take it to a tranny shop (sadly Ammco is it for em around here and they did my dodge last year). I also have a bit of clucking when I turn the motor off...a ratttling clunk that I am assuming is the dual mass flywheel. Thing is that sometimes it's a small rumble, and other times a larger one..always on shutdowm. Any advice?

andywe, There's no way I can think of that overfilling could cause a leak. If it coming from the bellhousing area, it likely a front tranny seal, but could be a rear engine seal too.

Yep, sounds like a flywheel going south. There are a few members that had good luck with ammco, even with the pesky e4od's. The good news is, you can have both fixed at the same time, saving a little labor $$.

Search this site for flywheel for all the info you'll ever need.

The rear main seal itself is not too bad. Pull the tranny, unbolt the seal and pry it out. The hard part is there is a rotating sleeve on the crank shaft the main seal rides on. It is a booger to replace if it's worn. You can remove the engine backing plate to get enough room to get the sleeve off with a puller, but getting the new one pressed back on is a pain.

Thanks Cookie
This already sounds like it is too much for me. With as many miles as it has, I think I will go ahead and have the the flywheel and clutch replaced, with a single mass wheel.

RE: oil leask and rear seal

I took thje truck into Ammco today and the tranny seal is just find. the ATF in it is good and also red. The oil Im leaking is black. The kid who looked has a PSD and has been working ont hem for several years, and told me some not so good news:

Multiple leaks.

1) Front of the oil pan
2) Looks like the engine main seal
3) Possible from the right side eshaust manifold..the trail ran down the block from up there but he couldn't see far enough up to definitively tell.

Before I call a Diesel shop (Nearest is 30 miles away unless I want to get raped by a dealer), advice would be most appreciated.

The front maim seal ain't so hard to do, but the rear oil galley plug leak can be a PITA. That's what I assume it to be from your description. Could be a valve cover leaking too I guess.

THe oil galley plug is sealed with an o'ring, tightening it usually doesn't fix it. It's the small circle right next to the turbo outlet. As you can see the DP gets in the way.

Does the downpipe have to come off to replace the oil galley plug on the Right Rear? There's just that one band clamp on the downpipe up top that I can see...if I take it loose is that enough? Going to try and do this tomorrow and want to have as much info as possible. Any info is greatly appreciated!
