flowmaster exhaust
I've been thinking of putting either a Flowmaster 40, super 40, delta 40, super 44, 50, 50 big block, or 70 big block. I have a 2006 5.4 v8. Out of all of these, which one has the best sound, but isn't really really loud?

Try magniflow first. Then try the flowmaster 50.
When I was looking at V8 exhausts, I wanted a deep rumble with no raspyness and no popping crap. I liked the magniflow the best. I think the larger flowmaster mufflers will give u a quiet and deep rumble as well.
I got a flowmaster 40 series with an additional turbo muffler before the flowmaster to quiet things down. I'm pretty happy with it. Sounds awesome and I can drive late at night and not wake the neighbors.

As far as flowmaster goes... I had a super 44, now I got the 10 series. They sound about the same, the 10 is louder and I like the exhaust note while she's idling better than the 44. Drone in the cab isn't too bad. Around 1300-1400 rpm is the drone zone... anywhere above or below that, its quiet.

if the new muffler is shorter, and i need to get some more pipe to connect it, where is the best place to buy some?

I picked up a 10 ft piece cheap at a Mills Fleet Farm; kind of a farm/everything store. Shorter pieces might even be available at auto parts stores for not much; it's not going to be that much shorter, so you won't need a lot.
