So I just bought a 41 pickup and i had a few questions. The serial number on the frame has a star after it and the guy i'm buying it from did know if that meant anything, and i was wondering if it does. Also he was saying i should convert it from a 6 volt system to a 12 volt system like modern vehicles and i was wonder how hard that is to do or if it's worth it to do it. I'll post pictures of it this weekend or the next (i still need to switch the title over and pick it up) and i'm pretty sure I'll be asking a lot of questions because this is the first vehicle i will have every restored.
The 6 volt conversion is VERY simple, pretty much swap the generator for an alternator and a little engine compartment wiring, replace all your light bulbs etc (some folks use regulators to reduce current to gauges etc.) of course replace the battery......
Welcome to the site, and congratulations on your truck. All the serial numbers of the eras on Fords had a star. Should have a star and the beginning and the end of the number. Ford used it to prevent anybody from adding more numbers to the serial number. The voltage conversion is easy, and is not all that expensive. Many here have done it and can walk you through it. Again, welcome, feel free to ask any questions you might have.
You can buy a 12v generator from a later model and adapt it or you can see if you have a local auto electric tebuilder and have them convert it for you. You can also now buy an alternator that is housed in a generator looking housing. Generators and alternators both have their pros and cons.
