I just bought a 93 f250 7.3 idi. When i give it fuel black smoke comes out followed by white smoke.I also had to add antifreeze when i bought it.Blown head gasket and Ideas??Also I have a return line seal leaking replaced it once and it still leaks. When i first crank it, it cranks right up but dies 3 seconds later unless i give it fuel?? ANY IDEAS ON ANY OF THESE PROBLEMS?????
If you are sure it is a head gasket, there is only one fix, replace the gasket. Pulling the engine is the best way in my opnion, as the heads are heavy, and it is hard to place the heads bending over the fenders. Cavitation is another possibility, if the cooland additive wasn't kept in the cooling system, and if that is the case, the engine has to be replaced, or rebuilt sleeving the cylinder that has cavitation.
Starting and dieing in 3 seconds is air intrusion. The leaking return line is letting air into the system, and the fuel in the filter is running bact to the tank. When you replaced the returns did you replace all the o-rings on all the injectors? You need to lube the o-rings and the caps really well before you reinstall the caps. I usually use vasoline to lube them, but oil or grease will work. Some of the low quality installation kits have been reported to have ridges left in them from when they were manufactured that can cut the 0-rings when the caps are placed on the injectors. These can be cleaned up with a sharp knife before trying to install them.
