Only done it once so far

I went to start my truck today and when it started it blew black smoke out the the filter, and I tryed again it started fine. I have my ebpv on a switch. And I think the switch got a short, would that cause it to do what it done.

Uh... Yikes. I guess if it runs and it's not currently doing it, I would probably just drive it and keep an eye on it if I were you.

Maybe someone with a little more mechanical experience can chime in here.

I'm not sure, but I'd guess that is normal as your exhaust would have been mainly blocked from the ebpv.

It sounds to me like maybe your batteries are weak and the engine wasn't able to turn over fast enough to start then it kinda backfired through the intake. I've seen small diesel engine do that before when they can't turn over quick enough to start.
